The Good and the Bad
Vietnam is a fantastic country, a real gem of Southeast Asia. Beyond the fact that it has absolutely unreal, one-of-a-kind natural sights like Lan Ha Bay, Ha Long Bay, and Ninh Binh Province — places like these simply don’t exist anywhere else on the planet — what impressed me the most personally was the north and its small ethnic communities.
Traveling there feels like getting into a time machine and going back in time. Everything is so raw, so authentic. Kids riding along the road on the backs of water buffalo. Men and women gathering at markets in their colorful traditional clothes, not for tourists or shows, but because that’s just how things are done.
It’s not easy to see this side of Vietnam. Even though the country isn’t that big, getting to these places turned out to be quite difficult. But it was far away from the main tourist hubs that I saw the Vietnam that stayed with me forever.

Want me to tell you something you won’t read in most guidebooks about Vietnam? The country is basically one huge plastic dump. An insanely beautiful land by nature, completely buried under trash.
And it doesn’t matter where you are. Hiking a jungle trail up to a sacred mountain, standing on a quiet, remote beach, or just stopping by the side of the road. Plastic is everywhere. The only real exception is the territory of big hotels, which get cleaned every day by their staff.
It’s shameful. It’s disrespectful.
What hurts the most is seeing this in fishing villages. Places that have lived off the sea for hundreds of years, and now that same sea is being turned into a landfill. Traveling through this country is literally painful, because there is so much beauty here, and it’s been so badly disfigured.
